Ignitable Waste Transportation and Disposal

Ignitable Wastes are in a special category by themselves.  Generally, they are described as:

  • Liquids with a flashpoint of less than 60o C / 140o F
  • Solids that burn spontaneously
  • Flammable compressed gas
  • Oxidizers
  • Materials with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) flammability hazard rating of 3 or 4.

Waste material meeting the above requirements are defined as Hazardous Wastes under RCRA and must be managed under strict procedural guidelines covering their handling, transportation, and disposal. If your facility generates these ignitable wastes, then your facility retains liability from “cradle to grave.”  To manage this exposure and minimize your liability, your facility should rely only on permitted companies for the handling and disposal of your waste.
